Our history
Sydney Uni Muay Thai had humble beginnings in 1998. The club, which was started by Chin-Liang Beh, better known as CL, has had University of Sydney students and the general public kicking bags and cracking pads for more than a quater of a century.
What began as a group fitness class later exploded with popularity, establishing itself as a non-profit club under Sydney University Sport & Fitness in 2018.
Since then the club has invested heavily in the Boxing Gym at Sydney Uni Sport & Aquatic Centre, fitting the gym out with mats, bags and some of the best Thai pads in the game.
In 2025, the club remains true to its founding principles and aims to develop student athletes, providing them with an affordable and safe training environment which allows them to grow and develop.
Our founding trainer CL remains committed to the club and it still a key decision maker. He works with Joe, Will and Dilara who oversee the club’s operations and its development. The club has a total of 7 trainers who teach one class a week each from All Levels options to Advanced Class for our fighters and more experienced members.
How we’re run
As a not-for-profit sporting club, SUMT operates on wafer thin margins. It’s entire executive team is run by volunteers, all of whom are also trainers.
Sound tough? It can be. But it’s one of those that pays in the thanks and smiles of members. There’s something truly special about giving back to your community and being able to foster and develop the growth of something bigger than yourself.
Our traivers are also volunteers who receive an annual honorarium which covers their class and the cost of travel to and from the club. Trainers receive a full uniform (Muay Thai shorts, shirts, hand wraps and ankle guards) as well as equipment to use including gloves, shin guards and more.
SUMT staff also receive opportunities to upskill with courses including First Aid covered by the club.
Want to get invovled? Reach out to your executive team. We’re always on the lookout for volunteers who have a vision and would like test and grow the club in different ways.
